Finding the best walks

Opinions differ when it comes to finding the best places to enjoy walks in the British countryside.  Some people opt for the National Parks which very often have a number of marked trails which you can safely follow in the knowledge that these tracks are cared for and generally well maintained.  Others prefer to ramble along public bridleways where you can often get a much more rustic experience.  Others still opt to walk one of the many ‘Ways’ in the UK.  Finding information on local walks and the best places to go is not always easy.  Sometimes the very best thing to do is to get personal recommendations from the locals.  I have had friends be astounded when I have started asking the locals about the best places to go whilst on holiday but it really is probably one of the best ways to find out where to go.  Most locals enjoy talking to tourists and are more than happy to advise you about the right track.

As always be mindful of personal security.  It is of course safer to walk with a friend or as part of a group than alone and if setting off alone always make sure that you let someone know what time you expect to be back.  When rambling alone or with others it is important to take a compass, some food and water, good walking boots and to take a mobile phone with you.  There aren’t many places nowadays that do not have good mobile phone reception and having your mobile phone with you, at least you can get some help in an emergency.  Do remember that most walks are pleasant and enjoyable and accidents seldom happen although it is of course sensible to take all sensible precautions listed above to safeguard your health and safety.
